We would like to inform you that POSTGRADUATE STUDENT COUNCIL (PGSC) and IEEE UTP Student branch in collaboration with Centre for Graduate Studies, UTP is organizing a hands-on training course on “LaTeX Article Writing and UTP Thesis Format”. This intensive one-day hands-on training course costs RM15 only and you will bring home a certificate and more confidence in using LaTeX software that would benefit you throughout your research journey.

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has grown to be one of the most prominent private universities in Malaysia and has attained prestigious national and international recognitions in less than two decades since it was established in 1997. UTP offers a wide range of industry-relevant engineering, science and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and aims to produce well-rounded graduates with excellent leadership qualities and communication abilities. For these reasons, the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers UTP Student Branch (IEEE UTP SB) was established to be a platform for students in building network locally and globally by sharing new ideas and information.
IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE’s highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, professional and educational activities. Therefore, the IEEE International Advanced Robotic Competition 2017 is proposed to fulfill its aim.
The Robotic Fiesta Malaysia 2016 held in UTP has successfully attracted around 1000 participants across Malaysia and it was the biggest robotics related event in Malaysia last year involving primary and secondary school children, college students, university undergraduate students, postgraduate students, researchers and academicians. This year, the spirit shall continue to provide the platform for Malaysians to showcase their knowledge and skills in robotics.
IEEE International Advanced Robotic Competition 2018 will be a collaboration among IEEE Student Branches in Malaysia Section to practice networking and . Each department of the event can be assigned to different universities’ student branch and led by UTP SB while the rules and regulations of the robotic competition will be set by Dr Irraivan A/L Elamvazuthi, Associate Professor in UTP and Chair of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS).

Petronita, IEEE Malaysia Women in Engineering (WIE) & the strategic partner UTP IEEE Student Branch is organizing a half-day class; Scratch Programming for Kids – on Saturday, 7th April 2018. Scratch is interactive and easy – making it suitable for kids to be introduced to and learn basic programming.

FYP-TechMemic

 

IEEE UTP Student branch in collaboration with Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, UTP is providing an online review service ‘FYP – TechMemics‘, for UG students of EE Dept. In this platform, PG students of EE Dept will review FYP technical reports. Furthermore, the top 3 papers will be recommended for either IEEE-SCOReD Conference 2018 or IEEE-ROMA Conference 2018. The main aim of the service is to improve the quality of the FYP papers, technically and conceptually. Moreover, to also encourage the students to publish their papers in reputed conferences or journals.

Technical Talk: Postgraduate Engineering Research in Taiwan

 

[Abstract]
There are many engineering companies in Taiwan, and a number of them are ranked top in the world. Formosa Plastic group is the largest private enterprise in Taiwan after over 40 years of development. The Group includes Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corporation, Formosa Petrochemical Corporation, and more than 20 other investments in Taiwan, the United States, China, and Indonesia, in addition to several large educational and medical organizations. The group’s asset is USD102 Billions, annual operating revenue is USD60 Billions. The group has set up three universities, namely Chang Gung University, Ming Chi University of Technology and Chang Gung Technology University.

This talk is to present to the undergraduate students the opportunity to continue their study and perform engineering research in Taiwan through Chang Gung University and Ming Chi University of Technology. Postgraduate students can also join in the research topics through the upcoming collaboration between our university and Chang Gung University as well as Ming Chi University of Technology. Chang Gung University is the top private University in Taiwan, and ranks 4 among all the Taiwan Universities. The University has the first and only comprehensive reliability research center in Asia. Ming Chi University of Technology rated as Excellent in University-Industry Liaison by Higher Education on Evaluation & Accreditation Council of Taiwan, and received Cooperative Teaching Excellence Award by Chinese Institute of Engineers. The engineering departments of both universities have received Engineering Education accreditation from IEET (Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan) and also the Engineering Accreditation from the Washington Accord.

This talk will be presented by Prof Tan Cher Ming, Director of Center for Reliability Science and Technologies in Chang Gung University, an ex-Professor from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and Prof Chieh-Lan Li, Director of Division of International Cooperation in Ming Chi University of Technology. 20 scholarship and free dormitory will be provided to Master students and 1 scholarship for Ph.D for Ming Chi University of Technology, and several scholarships for Ph.D are provided in Chang Gung University.

[About the Speaker]
Dr. Tan Cher Ming received his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1992. He has 10 years of working experiences in reliability in electronic industry (both Singapore and Taiwan) before joining Nanyang Technological University (NTU) as faculty member in 1996 till 2014. He joined Chang Gung University, Taiwan and set up a research Center on Reliability Sciences and Technologies in Taiwan and acts as Center Director. He is Professor in Electronic Department of Chang Gung University, Chair Professor in Ming Chi University of Technology, Taiwan. He has published more than 300 International Journal and Conference papers, and giving more than 40 invited talks in International Conferences and several tutorials in International Conferences. He holds 12 patents and 1 copyright on reliability software. He has written 4 books and 3 book chapters in the field of reliability. He is an Editor of Scientific Report, Nature Publishing Group, an Editor of IEEE TDMR and Series Editor of SpringerBrief in Reliability. He is also in the Technical committee of IEEE IRPS.

He is a past chair of IEEE Singapore Section, senior member of IEEE and ASQ, Distinguish Lecturer of IEEE Electronic Device Society on reliability, Founding Chair and current Chair of IEEE Nanotechnology Chapter – Singapore Section, Fellow of Institute of Engineers, Singapore, Fellow of SQI, Executive Council member of SQI, Director of SIMTech-NTU Reliability Lab, and Senior Scientist in SIMTech. He is the Founding Chair of IEEE International Conference on Nanoelectronics, General Chair of ANQ Congress 2014. He is also the recipient of IEEE Region 10 Outstanding Volunteer Award in 2011. He is Guest Editor of International J. of Nanotechnology, Nano-research letter and Microelectronic Reliability. He is in the reviewer board of several International Journals such as Thin Solid Film, Microelectronic Reliability, various IEEE Transactions, Reliability Engineering and System Safety etc for more than 5 years. He is the only individual recipient of Ishikawa-Kano Quality Award in Singapore since 2014. He is also current active in providing consultation to multi-national corporations on reliability.

His research interests include reliability and failure physics modeling of electronic components and systems, finite element modeling of materials degradation, statistical modeling of engineering systems, nano-materials and devices reliability, and prognosis & health management of engineering system.

UTP Cyber Games 2017

 

Three main games which are DOTA 2, FIFA 17, and also Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) will be held for UTP Cyber Games 2017 (UCG 17). 64 teams are targeted to participate in our DOTA 2 tournament, 128 players for FIFA 17 tournament, and 32 teams for CS: GO tournament.

This event will be held on 8 – 9 July 2017 at Chancellor Complex, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. Open to all UTP students and Malaysian community!

Abstract:
The integrated circuit (IC) history started more than 55 years back and the technology progression during this period has immensely helped in understanding various materials and interfaces at the most miniaturized scale. The studies in turn have helped in developing many useful tools and techniques for the benefit of mankind. All these technological innovations and related advancements in the society – life style, health care and well-being, etc – are indebted to semiconductor device technology. Currently, we stand at another juncture as well, where the fruits of developments in the last century science and the depth of knowledge mankind acquired through research in material science and various mathematical tools merge to emerge in the form of nano-electronics, a new set of advancement for technological evolution. The progression of device technology and its transformation from microelectronics to the present stage of nano devices will be discussed in this talk. An overview of the evolution of electronics to the modern day smart devices employing nano technology will be included in view of 50 years of Moore’s law. The major challengers in analysis and metrology are discussed with relevance to the limitations in application of the tools and the complexity in analysis. Understanding the device physics in terms of electron conduction through various interfaces can provide a deep insight into the challenges in the technology progression. Many a times, our curriculum lacks the practical aspects of device processing and the complexity of science and engineering involved. The objective is to provide a broad picture of the vast area for study in the field of device technology, where the importance still lies on understanding the fundamentals of device physics, materials and interfaces.
